O GRANDE FOTOJORNALISMO MOSTRA-SE EM COIMBRA
O grande fotojornalismo volta a concentrar olhares em Coimbra já a partir do final de Maio, com o regresso do PRÉMIO ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM e do festival que lhe está associado. Um programa que arranca com a abertura simultânea de oito exposições internacionais de grande formato, inclui o concurso e entrega dos prémios de fotojornalismo e ainda um conjunto de aulas abertas com destacados fotojornalistas da cena internacional.
A decorrer entre 29 de Maio e 24 de Julho e tendo a Câmara Municipal como entidade co-organizadora, o festival abre com a inauguração simultânea das grandes exposições, distribuídas este ano pelos espaços da Sala da Cidade/Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, Museu Municipal de Coimbra/Edifício Chiado, Galeria Pinho Dinis/Casa Municipal da Cultura, Centro Cultural Penedo da Saudade, Galeria da Casa-Museu Bissaya Barreto, Café Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV) e Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha.
Desde logo destacamos a exposição QUANDO TUDO MUDOU, de Fabio Bucciarelli, um trabalho encomendado pelo The New York Times quando a infecção do coronavírus devastava o Norte de Itália, que vai ficar exposto na Sala da Cidade. TESTE À DEMOCRACIA AMERICANA, no Centro Cultural Penedo da Saudade, traz até Coimbra as melhores imagens da Agence France-Presse sobre os recentes dias de brasa nos EUA com a invasão do Capitólio pelos apoiantes de Donald Trump, as manifestações do Black Lives Matter, ou o cerco à assembleia do estado de Michigan.
Também MORTE E NEGAÇÃO NA AMAZÓNIA, de Felipe Dana (Café TAGV), e SNS-COVID-19: MOBILIZAÇÃO GERAL, de Manuel Roberto (Casa Municipal da Cultura) deixam impressionantes testemunhos da luta contra a pandemia, enquanto o drama internacional dos refugiados e deslocados é retratado nos trabalhos VOZES, de Muhammed Muheisen (Edifício Chiado) e ONDE DORMEM AS CRIANÇAS, de Magnus Wennman (Galeria da Casa-Museu Bissaya Barreto). Já TÚLIPAS DESVANECIDAS (Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha), de William Daniels, traz-nos uma preocupada reflexão sobre a frágil democracia pós-soviética no Quirguistão.
Será nos primeiros dias de Junho que o júri internacional se reunirá para escolher os vencedores deste ano dos prémios de fotojornalismo ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM 2021 COIMBRA. As candidaturas decorrem ainda até ao dia 31 de Maio. Este ano, o júri será composto por THOMAS BORBERG (presidente), editor-chefe de fotografia do Politiken, da Dinamarca, e também jurado do World Press Photo; JODI BIEBER, vencedora de vários prémios internacionais, incluindo o Premier Award da World Press Photo em 2010; FABIO BUCCIARELLI, fotógrafo, jornalista e escritor cujos trabalhos têm sido reconhecidos com prémios como a Medalha de Ouro Robert Capa, World Press Photo, Best of Photojournalism ou Fotógrafo do Ano 2019 pela Pictures of the Year International. A etíope AÏDA MULENEH, fundadora e directora do Addis Foto Fest que iniciou carreira no The Washington Post e tem uma mostra do seu trabalho na colecção permanente do Museu de Arte Moderna (MoMA), MUHAMMED MUHEISEN, fotógrafo da National Geographic e duplo vencedor do Prémio Pulitzer, e PIERRE FERNANDEZ, director operacional para a Promoção de Conteúdos Multimédia da Agence France-Presse (AFP), são os restantes elementos do júri que vai reunir entre os dias 1 e 6 de Junho, desta vez via zoom.
É também por via digital que este ano terão lugar as AULAS ABERTAS DE FOTOJORNALISMO. Decorrerão entre 8 e 11 de Junho e serão ministradas por Muhammed Muheisen, Jodie Bieber, Thomas Borberg, Pierre Fernandez, Magnus Wennman e Fabio Bucciarelli, e onde se falará de questões ligadas à reportagem fotográfica e ao multimédia ao serviço da fotografia, de histórias do fotojornalismo ou do trabalho da Everyday Refugees Foundation.
Único na Península Ibérica dedicado ao fotojornalismo, este concurso aprecia trabalhos de fotógrafos portugueses, dos PALOP e da Galiza, bem como de estrangeiros aí residentes. É de entre todas as reportagens apresentadas a concurso que o júri escolhe a vencedora do PRÉMIO ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM e a FOTOGRAFIA DO ANO, assim como os vencedores das diversas categorias a concurso. Elege ainda o vencedor da BOLSA ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM COIMBRA, que ao longo do ano poderá desenvolver um projecto fotográfico documental sobre o distrito de Coimbra.
Num ano ainda marcado pelas restrições da pandemia covid-19, não se realizará a exposição e lançamento do livro resultantes da BOLSA ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM 2020 COIMBRA, atribuída ao projecto INTERIOR, de Ricardo Lopes, que se viu impossibilitado de o executar. Mesmo assim, a bolsa será este ano novamente atribuída, pelo que na próxima edição, em 2022, serão apresentadas as duas exposições e respectivos livros.
A cerimónia de anúncio dos vencedores e entrega de prémios vai ter lugar no dia 12 de Junho, na Antiga Igreja do Convento São Francisco. Entre as oito grandes exposições inclui-se as dos trabalhos vencedores do PRÉMIO ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM 2020 COIMBRA, patente na Galeria Pinho Dinis/Casa Municipal da Cultura até ao dia 24 de Julho.

GRAND PHOTOJOURNALISM IN COIMBRA
The best photojournalism is back in Coimbra from late May with the return of the ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM AWARD and associated festival. The program, kicking off with the simultaneous opening of eight large-format international exhibitions, includes the competition, the announcement of winners and ceremony, and also several open classes by internationally renowned photojournalists.
Taking place between May 29 and July 24, and co-organised with the Coimbra City Council, the festival opens with the tandem inauguration of its main exhibitions in several venues – Sala da Cidade/Câmara Municipal de Coimbra, Museu Municipal de Coimbra/Edifício Chiado, Pinho Dinis Gallery/Casa Municipal da Cultura, Centro Cultural Penedo da Saudade, Casa-Museu Bissaya Barreto Gallery, Café Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV), and Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha.
A major highlight on the exhibition WHEN EVERYTHING CHANGED (at the Sala da Cidade/Câmara Municipal de Coimbra) by Fabio Bucciarelli. Developed for The New York Times, Bucciarelli’s work documents the ravaging effect of the coronavirus epidemic in northern Italy. AMERICAN DEMOCRACY TESTED (at the Centro Cultural Penedo da Saudade) brings us Agence France-Presse’s top images on the recent events in the US, notably, the invasion of the Capitol by president Donald Trump’s supporters, the Black Lives Matter demonstrations, and the siege of the Michigan state assembly. Also DEATH AND DENIAL IN THE AMAZON by Felipe Dana (at Café Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente) and SNS-COVID-19: GENERAL CALL by Manuel Roberto (Pinho Dinis Gallery/Casa Municipal da Cultura) offer impressive testimonies of the fight against the pandemic. The worldwide tragedy of refugees and displaced people is documented in Muhammed Muheisen’s VOICES (Museu Municipal de Coimbra/Edifício Chiado) and also by Magnus Wennman in WHERE THE CHILDREN SLEEP (Casa-Museu Bissaya Barreto Gallery). FADED TULIPS by William Daniels (at Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha) brings a disconcerting reflection about a fragile democracy in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan.
Meeting in early June, the international jury will choose the award winners of the ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM AWARD COIMBRA 2021. Submissions are open until May 31. The jury will be chaired by THOMAS BORBERG, photo editor-in-chief at Politiken in Denmark and jury member at the World Press Photo. Meeting between the 1st and 6th of June (via zoom), the other members of the jury are: JODI BIEBER, winner of several international awards including the 2010 World Press Photo Premier Award; FABIO BUCCIARELLI, photographer, journalist and writer whose work has been recognised with awards such as the Robert Capa Gold Medal, World Press Photo, Best of Photojournalism or Photographer of the Year 2019 by Pictures of the Year International; AÏDA MULENEH, from Ethiopia, founder and director of the Addis Foto Fest, who started her career at The Washington Post and has a summary of her work
in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); MUHAMMED MUHEISEN, National Geographic photographer and double winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and also PIERRE FERNANDEZ, Agence France-Presse (AFP) Multimedia Content Manager.
The OPEN CLASSES ON PHOTOJOURNALISM (online, June 8th-11th) will be guided by Muhammed Muheisen, Jodie Bieber, Thomas Borberg, Pierre Fernandez, Magnus Wennman, and Fabio Bucciarelli. They will explore issues and themes on photographic reporting, multimedia in photography, the history of photojournalism, and the work of the Everyday Refugees Foundation.
The only prize dedicated to photojournalism in the Iberian Peninsula, the competition is open to photographers from Portugal and Galicia, and from Portuguese-speaking African countries as well as to foreigners residing in all these territories. The jury chooses the winner of the ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM AWARD, the PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE YEAR and the winners in the various categories from among all the reports submitted to the competition. The jury also decides who will be the winner of GRANT ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM COIMBRA which was set up to support a year-long photo-documentary project on any theme with a focus on the Coimbra region. In a year still marked by the restrictions of the covid-19 pandemic, this time there will be no exhibition nor launch session of the book resulting from last year’s GRANT ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM 2020 COIMBRA awarded to Ricardo Lopes’s project entitled INTERIOR whose completion was postponed. Hence this year the grant will be re-allocated which means that in the next edition, in 2022, we will be presenting two exhibitions and their respective books.
The announcement of winners and prize ceremony will take place on June 12 at the Old Church of the Convento São Francisco. Alongside the eight major exhibitions we will be showcasing the prize winner works ESTAÇÃO IMAGEM 2020 COIMBRA AWARD, open to public viewing at the Pinho Dinis Gallery/Casa Municipal da Cultura until July 24.
